How to Check Unknown Devices on Hotel or Rental Wi-Fi

Learn how to interpret devices visible on accommodation Wi-Fi, which signals add context, and what a local network scan cannot prove.

What does a local device list show?

A local network scan gathers technical signals from devices that are currently reachable on the same network as your phone. An IP address, published device name, network information associated with a vendor and standard service announcements may all add context.

The list is not an inventory of every electronic object in the property. Network reachability alone does not explain a device’s physical location, owner or purpose. A result is therefore a starting point, not a definitive diagnosis.

Why can a device appear “unknown”?

Devices do not always publish a useful name. A router, access point, television, printer, console, phone, smart plug or thermostat may expose only a generic network identity. Vendor information may identify a component manufacturer rather than the brand printed on the product.

Private or rotating Wi-Fi addresses can also make the same personal device appear with a different network identity over time. Apple explains that this behavior is designed to reduce tracking across networks.

Why might some devices not appear at all?

A scan operates only within the access boundaries of the current network. A device may not appear when the guest network isolates clients, the device is on another network, it is offline or it records only to local storage. A wired device can appear when it is reachable on the same local network, but a phone cannot always determine whether its physical connection is Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

An empty list therefore does not mean “no camera” or “the room is safe.” A long list does not mean danger either; hotel and apartment networks can contain many legitimate infrastructure devices.

How to read a result screen

Start with why the device stands out. A published name, vendor match, standard services such as ONVIF or RTSP and the consistency of several signals are more useful than a label alone. Böcekto makes those reasons visible and does not hide uncertainty.

Compare the result with listing disclosures, known devices in the room and information from the property. If the explanation remains unclear, ask through an official channel instead of tampering with the device. If you feel unsafe, move to a safe place rather than continuing the investigation.

Why is local network permission requested?

On iPhone and iPad, the system asks for permission the first time an app wants to interact with devices on the local network. The user can later enable or revoke this access under Privacy & Security in Settings. Local network access is separate from camera or microphone access.

Böcekto’s planned approach is minimum permission, on-device assessment and explainable results. A scan should be started only on a network you are authorized to use; it is not intended to bypass network security, try passwords or access a device stream.

Is every unknown device a security risk?

No. An ordinary TV, phone, router or IoT device can appear unknown when it publishes no useful name or its vendor is not recognized.

Can a wired camera appear in a network scan?

It may appear when reachable on the same local network. A mobile device cannot always reliably distinguish a physical Ethernet connection from Wi-Fi.

Why do some devices not appear?

Devices may be offline, on another network, behind guest isolation or operating without a network connection.

Is vendor information enough to confirm a camera?

No. It may identify a network component, and one vendor can make many product types. Several signals and physical context are needed.

Does Böcekto access video or audio?

Is a scan result evidence on its own?
