What to Do If You Suspect a Camera in Your Rental
Safety-first steps when a device seems suspicious: avoid tampering, separate facts from assumptions and use official support channels.
- ✓Move to a safe place first if you feel an immediate risk.
- ✓Without touching the device, record observable facts rather than assumptions.
- ✓Contact the property, platform and local authorities through official channels as appropriate.
1. Assess your personal safety first
If you feel watched, threatened or physically unsafe, stop investigating. Leave the room or property calmly and move to a safe, public place. You do not need to return to collect everything, identify a device or confront anyone.
For an immediate and ongoing danger, contact the local emergency service. In Türkiye, the single emergency number is 112. When traveling elsewhere, save the destination’s emergency number before arrival.
2. Separate observable facts from assumptions
An unknown network device, unusual electronics or an undisclosed smart-home product may deserve a question. None is proof of a camera or unlawful recording on its own. Check whether the device is described in the listing, room guide or property information.
Airbnb prohibits security cameras and recording devices that monitor indoor areas of home listings; hidden cameras are strictly prohibited. Permitted exterior cameras must be disclosed by location. Hotel lobbies and corridors can be subject to different platform policies and local rules, so do not apply one home-listing rule to every accommodation type.
- Note where and how the device appears.
- Look for a disclosure in the listing or property information.
- Do not describe a network result as physical camera detection.
3. Document only when safe, without interfering
If you are in a safe position, save the listing description, official messages and a general photo showing the device in context. Note the date and time, and describe what you can observe without adding conclusions.
Do not open, dismantle, cut cables, cover the device or attempt to access a stream. Doing so can increase personal risk and complicate the situation under local law or a later investigation.
4. Contact the right official channel
At a managed hotel, contact the front desk, security team or property management. In a short-term rental, message the host and booking platform through the official in-app channel. Ask plainly what the device is, why it was not disclosed and which area it covers.
Airbnb provides tools for reporting a listing or profile. For a safety issue during an active reservation, use the platform’s support and safety flow. If there is immediate danger or a suspected crime, contact local law enforcement or emergency services instead of waiting for a platform response.
- Hotel: front desk, security or property management
- Short-term rental: host and booking platform
- Immediate danger or suspected crime: local emergency service or law enforcement
5. Remember the limits of a network scan
A local network scan such as Böcekto can provide an explained assessment of reachable devices and standard services that may be associated with cameras. It cannot prove that a device is physically in your room, that it is a camera or that it is recording.
Likewise, no highlighted device does not mean the environment is completely safe. Devices that are offline, isolated, on another network or operating without a network connection may not appear. Read a network result alongside listing information, physical context and an official explanation.
6. Avoid confrontation and public accusations
Confronting someone directly, returning to point out a device or publishing personal information online can increase tension and risk. Move to safety first, then share factual observations with the platform and appropriate authorities.
Rules about recording devices, evidence and privacy differ across countries. Seek local law enforcement or qualified legal support rather than relying on a universal legal interpretation.
Frequently asked questions
Should I unplug or dismantle a suspicious device?
No. Interfering with a device can create safety and legal risks. Move to safety, note visible facts and use official channels.
Is taking a photo a good step?
Only when safe and without touching the device, a general photo showing context may help support. Do not stay to document if you feel unsafe.
Should I contact the host or platform first?
For a non-emergency, you can contact both the property/host and platform support through official messaging. In immediate danger, move to safety and contact local emergency services first.
When should I leave the property?
Leave when you do not feel safe, there is a threat or waiting for an explanation could increase risk. Booking and belongings come after personal safety.
Does a Böcekto result prove a camera exists?
No. It is an explainable assessment based on reachable network signals, not proof of a physical camera or unlawful recording.
